Jenkins Integration - SortSite Developer Manual

$

0

To test build outputs using SortSite Developer with Jenkins:

  1. Make sure the built app or site is available via an HTTP server (e.g. http://localhost/output or http://your-staging/ )
  2. Create a configuration file setting ProcessURL to the build output URL setup in the previous step
  3. To flag a build failure when any issues are detected, set the ExpectedResults element in the XML configuration file
  4. In Jenkins, create an Execute Shell task as the last build step to run SortSiteCmd passing the path of the XML configuration file, using a script similar to this:
"c:\Program Files (x86)\PowerMapper Software\SortSite 5\SortSiteCmd.exe" C:\Projects\SortSite.ssconfig
/Applications/SortSite.app/Contents/MacOS/SortSiteCmd /Projects/SortSite.ssconfig

Note: If you install Jenkins as a Windows service, it defaults to running under the Local System account.

This may cause problems if you need to access user-profile specific settings, such as self-signed certificates or recorded forms. Form replays recorded by the desktop app will only work when the command line tool is run using the same user account as the desktop app (because the replay data is encrypted using the user account’s DPAPI encryption key).

In general, only critical Windows services (and not Jenkins) should run under the Local System account, because it has a very high privilege level.

To test build outputs using SortSite Developer with Atlassian Bamboo:

  4. In Bamboo, create an Command task as the last build step to run SortSiteCmd.exe passing the path of the XML configuration file, using a script similar to this:

    "c:\Program Files (x86)\PowerMapper Software\SortSite 5\SortSiteCmd.exe" C:\Projects\SortSite.ssconfig
    /Applications/SortSite.app/Contents/MacOS/SortSiteCmd /Projects/SortSite.ssconfig

See the Bamboo documentation for creating tasks.

Note: If you install Bamboo as a Windows service, it defaults to running under the Local System account. This may cause problems if you need to access user-profile specific settings, such as self-signed certificates. In general, only critical Windows services should run under the Local System account, because it has a very high privilege level. See the Bamboo documentation for running as a local user.

HTML vs XHTML version statistics

$

As part of the online demo at try.powermapper.com we collect summary statistics about pages scanned by our service. One interesting statistic covers versions of HTML and XHTML in common use. As of March 2019:

  • HTML 5 DOCTYPEs account for over 90% of pages scanned (up from 8% in 2011)
  • XHTML 1.0 DOCTYPEs account for under 5% of pages scanned (down from 60% in 2011)
  • XHTML 1.1 DOCTYPEs have vanished, and account for 0% of pages scanned (down from 1% in 2011)
  • HTML 4.01 DOCTYPEs account for about 1% of pages scanned (down from 10% in 2011)
  • About 2% of pages scanned have no DOCTYPE (down from 5% in 2011)

HTML Version by Doctype: HTML 5 93%; XHTML 1.0 5%; XHTML 1.1 0%; HTML 4.01 1%

HTML vs. XHTML Version Statistics

This is based on a sample size of over 20 million pages on 2 million web sites.

Test notes

All tests were carried out with screen reader factory settings. JAWS in particular has a wide variety of settings controlling exactly what gets spoken.

Screen readers allow users to interact in different modes, and can produce very different results in each mode. The modes used in these tests are:

  • Reading Content read using the «read next» command in a screen reader
  • Tabbing Content read using the «tab» key in a screen reader
  • Heading Content read using the «next heading» key in a screen reader
  • Touch Content read when touching an area of screen on a mobile device

In the «What the user hears» column:

  • Commas represent short pauses in screen reader voicing
  • Full Stops represent places where voicing stops, and the «read next» or «tab» or «next heading» command is pressed again
  • Ellipsis … represent a long pause in voicing
  • (Brackets) represent voicing that requires a keystroke to hear

Last updated: April 3, 2019

Expected Result: works in a screen reader

Actual Result: causes problems in 32 screen reader / browser combinations

Note: some screen readers have speech dictionaries mapping common abbreviations to their spoken equivalents. For example, "etc" is usually mapped to "et cetera" when spoken in NVDA and JAWS. This can give the impression the `abbr title` attribute is being spoken when in fact the speech dictionary is being used. JAWS has an 'Expand Abbreviations' setting which does read `abbr title`, but this is turned off by default.
